Most “successful” people, as the entrepreneur and investor Andrew Wilkinson has observed, are just a walking anxiety disorder, harnessed for productivity. I have met many of them. Some of the world’s richest people. Most powerful political leaders. Singers and actresses. Influencers and billionaires.

Very few are truly happy. Most of them, in their conquest to become successful, have lost touch with their friends and families, gone through not just one but several divorces, and are constantly on the edge of burnout. Manic depression and self-hate fuel their motivation to get even richer, gain more followers, or become more powerful. Whether it’s the successful local entrepreneur or the president of the country, many of them are so broken that if people really knew how much they were suffering, no one would ever see them as goals or inspirations anymore.

The price of success, as it turns out, often isn’t worth the cost. It’s time to redefine what success really is.
